Monitors’ Responsibilities

Being a Monitor for DeafChat is a big responsibility. Monitors are entrusted with maintaining the good image of DeafChat. They are required to be mature, respectful, and patient even during times of frustration and chaos. It's hard work.

Monitors are also entrusted with information that must to be kept completely confidential. They need to be impartial in personal disputes, and fair to all visitors. They need to keep their emotions under control, even when dealing with difficult and disrespectful people.

The following is a list of expectations and requirements for all DeafChat Monitors.

Monitors are not here to abuse, control, or harass any visitor. We are here to preserve the safe, comfortable, and respectful atmosphere in DeafChat for the enjoyment of everyone. Monitors will not tolerate personal abuse from visitors in DeafChat. If this occurs, the troublemaker should be banned and other Monitors notified.

The following are some guidelines for Monitors in dealing with common situations in DeafChat. These guidelines are intended primarily for dealing with new DeafChat visitors. When dealing with people who are already familiar with the rules, you need not use as many warnings or tactics as indicated here. People who are familiar with the rules, or who are repeat rule-breakers, may require no warning at all. Remember: the purpose of DeafChat Monitors is to ensure the enjoyment of DeafChat for all visitors, by enforcement of the DeafChat Rules and by providing guidance to new DeafChat visitors.

When a problem exists in the room (flooding, ALL CAPS, etc.) please use only two warnings in a row. If the “problem-maker” does not respect your instructions promptly, then remove (boot) him/her from the room. When they return, if they repeat the “problem” activity, kick or ban them without warning.

If a visitor, even if s/heis new, uses adult language (rude sexual remarks, cuss words, hardcore profanity, etc.) remove (boot) him/her immediately. Use your best judgement. If they do not respect the rules on this matter, ban them.

Do not argue in the general rooms with visitors who have broken a rule. If a quick explanation of the rule is necessary, use PC. If they insist on making their complaint against the rules or the Monitors in the general rooms and will not discuss it in PC, ban them.

Monitors must be considerate to new visitors and available to help visitors when they have questions or concerns. When you are PC’d (even if you were not asked first), you should ask them politely if they need help.

Example: “Hi, how can I help you?”

If the visitor does not have a problem requiring a private conversation, direct them back to the chatroom.

If a visitor has a question or complaint that you are not able to settle, please direct them to chiefmonitor@deafchat.com
